About Miguel Dionisio Pires

Dr. Miguel Dionisio Pires is an aquatic ecologist. He graduated at Amsterdam University and obtained his doctorate at the Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) in the interaction between quagga mussels and cyano bacteria in the IJsselmeer region. After his doctorate, he worked as a postdoc at NOAA-GLERL in the US on the quality of the water in the Great Lakes. Since 2008, he works for Deltares, where he mainly works on the application of innovations in measuring techniques to, among other things, improve water quality models. He is especially interested in the use of Earth observation and other remote sensing methods. He is also very interested in predicting water quality. To this end, he developed the AlgenRadar (algae radar).

At Aeres University of Applied Sciences, he practices his research subjects by conducting in situ research, defining these subjects for students and sharing his enthusiasm for water quality with people.
